Saving Stuff For Best
TV Shows, clothes and even socks. Why do I do this and do you do it too?
Hi, I’m Becky, an artist and writer based in Derbyshire. I write about my life in what I hope is an honest and open way. I write about an array of topics, such as sobriety and autism, and about simply trying to find my way in this world. Please subscribe to support my work and to read more of my posts.
A friend bought me some David Bowie socks. That same year, my Mum bought me some bumblebee socks. These socks became my “best” socks which really just translates to that I didn’t wear them for months.

I do the same with clothes, feeling like they should be worn in a certain moment and that moment is never as I work from home or go on a nice meander around town.
I like to save tv shows and films to watch at the “right” time. Sometimes this is because I have an aversion to starting new things, often preferring to live in the comfort of familiarity. But, there is definitely this little voice that says “No, save it until it’s the right time.” Often meaning when I’m not at work or don’t have anything planned the next day.
I guess in someways I am wanting to savour the moments of wearing them or watching them. But, I just end up with a lot of clothes, not worn for years, that I love dearly or pairs of socks that sit in my drawer for months, waiting. Waiting for what, I hear you ask? I honestly don’t know. When do you wear your “best” socks?
In doing this, I am repeatedly telling myself that this isn’t a best kind of day. This is just a regular, old, mundane day. That just so happens to make up 99% of my life.
Why can’t I wear my best socks or a beautiful item of clothing on a regular, old, mundane day? Why can’t I look fucking fabulous on a trip to Aldi? Or, at the very least, my feet look fucking fabulous? Why can’t I watch that tv show that looks really good on a Tuesday night? Or watch that podcast I love whilst I’m on lunch break?
Why am I saving all my favourite stuff, the things I am most excited for, for some “best” kinda day?
Why can’t all my days, regular, mundane or not, be my best days?
✨ Do you do this too? Do you have a wardrobe full of beautiful clothes waiting on an invite to a palace? Or socks waiting on whatever the hell you’d wear your best socks too? Any tv shows just gathering dust in your planner, waiting on that “right” time?
Or do you do it with something else?

YES! I didn't know I was doing it with TV and podcasts as well until I read this. I have three pairs of really nice socks that are years old and I don't want to mess them up.
